A Brand New Flavor

Home brewing beer is a science. To get it right you need to be scientific in your approach, and it is often noted that science isn’t all about knowing everything. In fact, science by its very definition is about the fact that we do not, and cannot, know everything so we have to settle for finding out everything that we can and applying that knowledge as best we can. And that can be applied to home brewing, because brewing is a process that ensures you learn something new every time. The moment you stop learning is the moment it becomes a chore.
The brewing of flavored beers is a popular way to make home brewing more interesting. If you have never tasted a flavored beer, maybe now is the time to give it a go and see how enjoyable it can be – some of the more popular ones on the market are Belgian fruit beers which contain elements of cherry and raspberry. Technically, however, there are few limits to the fruits that you can add in the brewing process, and the effects that they can have on the taste.
That’s not to say that it will all be good. You have to make sure that what you are adding goes in at the right time, is added in the right form, and does not conflict with the other ingredients you have added. Finding the right mix is something that may take more than a few attempts. It’s not just a matter of trying new fruit flavors, either. The addition of spices or of other ingredients can turn out a fantastic beer, so it is worth continuing to experiment with different additions and seeing where they take you.

There is an unavoidable element of light mockery that surrounds the practice of home brewing beer. There will always be the same jokes – that you are so fond of a drink you decided that you couldn’t deal with the trip to the bar, for example. Or that you wanted to drive the price of beer so low that you could be permanently drunk without it costing you so much. Once you get over the impression that this is about being cheap and reinforce the fact that it is more of a hobby, though, there is a lot to recommend home brewing.
Getting off to a good start is important – you should not begin to brew beer at home until you have researched the process a little. What equipment will you need, how much can you make at a time, and how do you get the type of beer that you like? There is little point at all in setting up to brew a dark stout if you prefer lager – and many home brewers find that their early efforts tend towards the darker side of the spectrum.
Research how you should go about brewing the beer you like and what you will need in order to make it. There are plenty of places online where you can find great information – including communities dedicated to home brewing which will be full of people who can give you helpful tips and hints, and will be pleased to share some details of their own innovations. You also need to set aside the space for your equipment. If you are making an alcoholic drink, it should at all times be out of the reach of children.

It may just be a lingering impression from the days of prohibition, but the reputation of home-brewing beer for many is that the people who do it are half-way to being militia-men who hide out on communes in places so far off the map that no GPS system will ever find them. Although a lot is being done to address this, the fact is that people are usually prepared to spend more money drinking the pre-made beers than they are to take the time and effort to set up their own home brewing station.
Of course, the initial impression of those who home-brew their own beer is not the only reason why people don’t do it. Some people are quite skilled in brewing while others are not, just as some people are excellent cooks and some people after years of trying still cannot boil an egg. It is understandable that some will cut out the middleman and buy their beer from a liquor store because their own efforts at brewing would be likely to induce vomiting without needing to be drunk in huge quantities.
However, brewing your own beer is not something you should just reject out of hand. If you give it a try, you might find that you are good at it. And if you are, then there is a world of opportunity there for you. If you have never found that beer that tastes just right, you can experiment with different measures, modalities and timings until you get one that is perfect. It is an acquired skill, but one worth acquiring.
