Getting The Basics Right

To brew your own beer, you need to have a few things in place before you start. First of all you need a bit of spare time and a lot of patience, because it is almost certain that you will mess up your first batch in some way. Second of all, you will need the right equipment – and this can be as simple or as complicated as you are prepared to make it. To begin with, you will need a container large enough to hold at least twelve quarts. Yes, that is a lot, but without it you just can’t get the complexities right.
You will also need a measuring scale. Brewing recipes are very specific with regard to amounts used, and although you may believe you can judge by looking, a mistake one way or the other will ruin the batch. A thermometer is an essential too. At certain temperatures the beer can go badly wrong, so you’ll need to know how hot the mix is at any given time. A large metal spoon, which is clean when used, is also an essential. A wooden one will be too prone to impurity.
Keeping the mix from getting contaminated is vital. For this reason you will also need a sanitizing agent, a clean white towel and a rubber band. The first cleans the beer container, the latter two keep anything from settling on the mix. Finally, you will need bags for the hops and the grains you use, and equipment to allow you to transfer beer to bottles as well as the bottles themselves and some capping equipment. It all sounds like a lot, but if you are serious about brewing it turns out to be worth the cost and effort.

There is an impression in many people’s minds that factory conditions are necessary in order to make something as complicated as beer. It is true that brewing a beer is not like cooking a meal – the skills involved in both overlap, but there are plenty of people who can do either one of the above, but are useless at the other. But factory conditions are not necessary, and you can brew your own beer at home and produce something worth drinking. Indeed, some of the more critically acclaimed beers available commercially were brewed in something that equates to a garden shed.
The advantage that home brewing has over purchasing ready-made beer commercially is that you are not limited by the choice on the shelves in front of you. Do you want this batch to be just a little darker? Do you want to flavor the next one? What flavor – banana? Plum? Apricot? Once you have the equipment, the world of beers opens up in front of you and you can be as bold or as conservative as you like.
Home brewing is not easy, and the chances are that even with a lot of preparation your first batch will be pretty close to rancid. Don’t despair if that is the case, the chances are that one of the many steps involved went a little bit wrong somehow. Retrace your steps and see if there was something you forgot. Try and work out what you can do next time to make sure it is right. Be a little more ambitious every time and before long, you will be producing beer that is the equal of, and then better than, that sold in any bar.

There is an unavoidable element of light mockery that surrounds the practice of home brewing beer. There will always be the same jokes – that you are so fond of a drink you decided that you couldn’t deal with the trip to the bar, for example. Or that you wanted to drive the price of beer so low that you could be permanently drunk without it costing you so much. Once you get over the impression that this is about being cheap and reinforce the fact that it is more of a hobby, though, there is a lot to recommend home brewing.
Getting off to a good start is important – you should not begin to brew beer at home until you have researched the process a little. What equipment will you need, how much can you make at a time, and how do you get the type of beer that you like? There is little point at all in setting up to brew a dark stout if you prefer lager – and many home brewers find that their early efforts tend towards the darker side of the spectrum.
Research how you should go about brewing the beer you like and what you will need in order to make it. There are plenty of places online where you can find great information – including communities dedicated to home brewing which will be full of people who can give you helpful tips and hints, and will be pleased to share some details of their own innovations. You also need to set aside the space for your equipment. If you are making an alcoholic drink, it should at all times be out of the reach of children.

It may just be a lingering impression from the days of prohibition, but the reputation of home-brewing beer for many is that the people who do it are half-way to being militia-men who hide out on communes in places so far off the map that no GPS system will ever find them. Although a lot is being done to address this, the fact is that people are usually prepared to spend more money drinking the pre-made beers than they are to take the time and effort to set up their own home brewing station.
Of course, the initial impression of those who home-brew their own beer is not the only reason why people don’t do it. Some people are quite skilled in brewing while others are not, just as some people are excellent cooks and some people after years of trying still cannot boil an egg. It is understandable that some will cut out the middleman and buy their beer from a liquor store because their own efforts at brewing would be likely to induce vomiting without needing to be drunk in huge quantities.
However, brewing your own beer is not something you should just reject out of hand. If you give it a try, you might find that you are good at it. And if you are, then there is a world of opportunity there for you. If you have never found that beer that tastes just right, you can experiment with different measures, modalities and timings until you get one that is perfect. It is an acquired skill, but one worth acquiring.
